Reading Response: Week 6-1

This week’s reading was on subject, and it is an area with which I have always struggled. I really enjoyed reading the different suggestions Fraser and Davidson had given. I especially liked the magical realist approach to subject, and it was interesting to read two poems on the same subject, death, that had two quite different tones and perspectives. I’m struggling to write about something every day in extraordinary language so it was really interesting to read how others had done it. It was also hilarious to see a poem about Barney. Barney is a character I would never think about incorporating into a poem because I would think that it would be lame or cheesy, but in the case of the poem in this chapter, I thought the poet had done a great job in incorporating Barney and biblical language to give meaning to her poem. This chapter gave me hope to the wide variety of topics/subjects on which a poem could be, but it also scared me because I feel like I can’t talk express a mundane idea in an extraordinary way. I guess I just have to keep trying and put a greater effort to incorporating what I am learning in this book to my poetry.
