Reading Response: Week 4-2

I found Russell Edson’s prose poetry very interesting to read. I think he purposely uses simple language in his poetry in contrast to the serious topics that are being discussed. The poem ‘Counting Sheep’ for example highlights the misusing of science and technology in modern society (at least that is what I got from reading the poem). I like how he says, ‘He wonders what he should do with them,’ questioning the purpose of most scientific findings. For the most part it seems as if scientists do things just because they can, and then they try to come up with uses for their latest discoveries. I especially like the last line of the poem, ‘He puts them under a microscope and falls asleep counting them.’ I think this act of falling asleep highlights the whole issue of the misuse of science in the simplest yet most subtle manner.
