Junkyard Quotes: Week 4

1.      “Any so-called material thing that you want is merely a symbol: you want it not for itself, but because it will content your spirit for the moment.”
This is a quote by Mark Twain that I had heard sometime back. I really like this quote because I feel it is very applicable to human needs. We crave for so many material things most of the time but we fail to realize that these material things only give us temporary satisfaction. Personally even though I know this, I can’t help but think I need certain material things for a better life. I just find it ironic that as much as I know that something is not really helpful, I can’t help but still want it.
2.      “Hit me with lightning.”
This is something I overheard this girl saying to her friend in the computer lab. I’m not sure in what context she said it because I was a bit engrossed in my work, but this line caught my attention and stuck in me. I think it will be a good name for a poem or it could even be used in a poem. I feel it can lead up to some interesting ideas and I am going to try writing something using it soon.
3.       “She’s been feeling a bit down since the disintegration of her parents marriage.”
One of my friends said this line and I couldn’t help but laugh for the way she said it. It would have been just a normal sentence if she had used divorce instead of disintegration, and I just found it interesting how one word could create a sense of sarcasm in a regular sentence.
4.      “No good deed goes unpunished.”
This is a quote by Oscar Wilde and I remembered it when one of my friends was complaining why things are always going wrong in her life. She was questioning why she should be a good person when only bad things happen to her. At that time I couldn’t help but tell her this line, but I’ve been thinking about it since then and as much as I’d like to believe it, I don’t think I actually always believe that good deeds do go unpunished. However, as much as I don’t always believe it, I think it’s ironic that this line would immediately come into my mind if I or anyone else I know questioned why we should do the right thing.
5.      “I want to get my tenure as well so I can sit around and do nothing.”
One of my professors said this recently, and up until she said this I actually respected her quite a lot. She always complains about how most of the people at UWG don’t care because they have got their tenure and they can’t be fired. It just felt like as much as she complains about others she is in a way waiting to do the same. There’s a big chance she might have been joking but I felt it was in the lines of they don’t care, so why should I, and I was just disappointed because this is one of the main problems we face. We always wait for someone else to make the change not realizing that we can be that someone.
