Reading Response: Week 13-1

The chapter “Crowding and Leaping” was a very informative chapter. I wrote a research paper for a class recently which I thought was quite okay. It was supposed to be a 5 page paper, but I had run over and I told my professor that all the information I included was needed. I thought I had written concise sentences and there was no way I could reduce the content. However, when I got my paper back, it was marked all over with red, showing all the excess words I had used. I couldn’t believe I had thought I couldn’t make my paper any shorter. So reading this chapter was definitely helpful and I think the exercise mentioned will be interesting to try. It will be helpful for editing my short stories and for any other paper I write in the future. I think a mistake I make most of the time is that I don’t write and blabber everything in the first draft. I still have trouble writing freely, and I think part of it has to be blamed on my laziness. I feel it would be a waste to spend time writing and then cutting the content down. Hence, my writing suffers. So I definitely need work on getting over this habit and force myself to write every single detail in the first draft. Writing and cutting down is not a waste because an interesting plot can unravel amidst all the details and blabbering. I will take the first step to do this by cutting down a short story I’ve written and then working on expanding it from there onwards.
