Junkyard Quotes: Week 12

1.      "Your attitude is like a red sock in a load of whites." Author Linda Roy from the website cool quotes
So a couple of weeks back when I was looking for a junkyard quotes I googled ‘cool quotes’ and I came across this quote and I jotted it down in my notebook. I finally decided I’ll use it this week. I think it’s a pretty neat line because there is an interesting use of language. It also reminded me of the short story Magic Barrel we read last week, where Stella was wearing the red dress with the white shoes.
2.      “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning stays young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young.” Henry Ford
I read this quote recently and I thought it summed up learning perfectly. Learning keeps us alive and in touch with everything around us, anyone who stops learning will be very empty.
3.      “She called him a tall drink of water” –Nick McRae
I was at the Soup Kitchen reading when Nick McRae read his poems and this is a line from one of his poems about his grandfather that caught my attention. I think this line is simple yet interesting. It’s an unusual way of saying his grandfather was a pleasure to be around.
4.      “Dear happiness, forgive me; / you are not what I make histories of...” – from Bruce Bond’s poem “Mercy”
I think these lines are simply awesome! It’s a very not cliché way of saying that the hard times we endure will make us stronger.

5.      “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment” –Ralph Waldo Emerson
I like this quote because it emphasizes the need to be unique. However, I sometimes think you do have to make certain changes to fit in. For example, there is a foreign professor I know who is really awesome at teaching and she goes out of her way to help motivated students succeed. However, she is very critical and has a weird personality that has made a lot of students hate her. While her ways make her unique I think she does need to change or she could risk losing her job. I would hate to see that happen because I think she could make a real change in university.
