Random Impulse: Week 2-2

A teardrop in the deep blue sea, a land rich with nature’s bounty.
Zoom closer through the layer of cotton wool clouds
And you’ll see an array of gently arcing golden-sand beaches
In the north and the south.
Trickling water from the mountains joining hands to form Mahewelli,
The never ending river that waltz from central to north-east.
Sinharaja, the pride of the lion, and a wonder of the world.
Not forgetting the man made wonders,
The dazzling white temples and the giant reservoirs,
Dotted all through the teardrop.
You can spy on King Kasyapa’s palace in the sky, and admire
The heavenly maidens crested on the rocks.

Zoom further,
And you’ll see Saman sucking the flesh of sweet juicy mangoes,
Succulent mangoosteens, or blood red jambu
As he sits under a banyan tree, basking the sun
Enjoying the cool breeze twinkling between his toes.
You’ll see the fiery sun as it begins to set,
Drawing its tentacles of light to the brightest orange, red and pink
The chirping birds litter the sky, rustling the tranquility, and
Scurrying to their nests before darkness conquers.

You can smell the spice filled aromatic air
Of coriander, cumin, saffron, and chili.
You’ll be welcomed with the brightest smiles
To the warmth of their abode
To share an array of curries: seafood, vegetables and meat.
A mouth-watering selection,
That will make your face blush, you’ll be asking for more
As you drink from a king coconut to conquer the heat.

Zoom even closer,
And you’ll see the pain behind the smiles
You’ll hear the tales of the darkest history
And you’ll learn of the silent battles for freedom, honor, and dignity.

  1. I love your description of the places and the settings and I especially enjoyed the names even if I cannot pronounce them well. What I liked more than anything though was what I got out of it: The idea that a place is more than just the people and the architecture. A place is history and it's all the people and all the art that make the past. I feel like this poem is really based around the concept of gestalt: The whole is larger than the sum of its parts.

  2. Hi David, thanks a lot for your comments. I really like your interpretation. This class is the first time I've ever written poetry, and this poem is a very rough draft. So if you have any suggestions to improve this poem, please let me know :)

And I look forward to reading your blog soon!
